About Me

I have a background in engineering, having studied Manufacturing Engineering & Management at Nottingham University and then a PhD looking into how small companies introduce new products. I worked as an engineer for Cyanamid, Rolls-Royce Aerospace and IBM UK Laboratories.

I had a bit of an early mid-life crisis and joined the Royal Navy at 30 as an Engineering & Training Management Officer, colloquially known as a Schoolie. During this I spent time at BRNC Dartmouth, HMS Campbeltown, HMS Ocean and HMS Sultan.

I loved my time in the RN, but I decided to take a career break to raise my two sons. My initial aspiration was to join the RN Reserves or teach maths at secondary school (possibly both!) but my health had different ideas.

Needing a flexible but fulfilling job, I made one for myself. I drew on my lifelong interest in art and combined it with my engineering and military knowledge to create my military art company Gillian Jones Designs. This website is not about that!

This website is a place for me to showcase and, occasionally, sell my "hand made" (non-digital) art. In the last few years I have been rediscovering my love of painting and printmaking. I have done a Foundation in Art & Design course with West Dean College and a year long printmaking course with Master Printmaker Mary Dalton.

My artwork is a place for me to explore my interests and feelings and therefore it does not have an overarching theme. I am inspired by, and interested in, many things; from my dog Togi to pre-historic rock art. Enjoy the journey with me.
